Pacific Biosciences is seeking a talented, driven, well-rounded and experienced Buyer in Menlo Park, California. The ideal candidate possesses the skill, vision, and drive necessary to assist in the development and implementation of a scalable world class materials management strategy for the company. They must also have a passion for Pacific Biosciences relevant technology, experience in all aspects of purchasing and supplier management; with strong interpersonal skills for dealing with all levels of the organization.


The qualified candidate has demonstrated the ability to pursue innovative procurement solutions based on an accurate assessment of business requirements. A successful track record of driving the procurement process, from supplier selection through long-term supplier management. The candidate must also have demonstrated the ability to implement and run continuous improvement programs on systems deployed to keep them current and relevant.


This position reports to the Materials Manager


Buyer candidate will be accountable to:

Procurement of indirect materials

Administer and optimize the utilization of Jagger on line purchase requisition system

Support on site supplier managed stocking programs for R&D, Production supplies 

Support of key internal functions, including Facilities, IT, R&D and Human Resources, supporting indirect procurement, agreements and projects as assigned.  

Negotiate materials, equipment, and supplies and evaluate vendor quotes and services to determine the most desirable suppliers

Confer with vendors in an effort to achieve and maintain lowest total overall cost, avoidance of price increases, reduced inventory levels, product and service levels that meet or exceed defined Pacific Biosciences quality and service levels

As assigned, support the purchasing of direct material, ensuring no stock-outs while maintaining minimum inventory levels

Maintain delivery status for all open purchase orders and convey information to end users 

Manage all return to supplier activities in support of internal customers

Reconcile problem packing lists/invoices

Position Requirements:

A minimum of 3-5 years experience as a Buyer in an ISO certified organization, experience in a Life Science environment is a plus

  Self-starter and a team player.  Experience in working with PLM and ERP systems, ideally Agile and SAP  

  Large- and small-company experience, ideally in leading manufacturing in a rapid-growth environment

  A proven track record of delivering on commitments within timeline and budget is required

  Proven track record in successfully identifying and delivering results which reduced costs and/or enhanced revenues

Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Excellent written and oral skills

Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills. Routinely engages in independent thought and judgment in developing methods, techniques and evaluation criteria

A general understanding of quality, regulatory and clinical standards is a plus

Undergraduate degree is a plus

Ability to work well under pressure in addition to meeting deadlines in a cross-functional team environment

Excellent interpersonal and communications skills are crucial

Must have strong work ethic
