Highlands Behavioral Health System is an 86 bed freestanding behavioral health hospital offering psychiatric care for adults and adolescents. Centrally located in Littleton, the facility is easily accessible to families throughout the Front Range and just minutes from surrounding communities.


Nursing Supervisor

The Nursing Supervisor provides continuous nursing care in the assigned area(s) in a manner consistent with the philosophy and objectives of the Hospital and within the framework of established policies and procedures of the Department of Nursing Services.  As a key team member in the clinical area, the Nursing Supervisor promotes a climate of effective performance through role modeling, willingness to learn and teach, and availability to patients and staff.  Organizes, manages and coordinates nursing services on assigned shift as delegated by the Chief Nursing Officer and Nursing Administration. 


Essential Job Duties:

  • Demonstrates leadership in organizing the delivery of patient care in an acute psychiatric setting for patients experiencing a wide range of psychiatric conditions.
  • Supervises and coordinates the work of professional and non-professional nursing staff.
  • Prioritizes nursing care resources to ensure patient safety.
  • Makes effective decisions regarding patient care in compliance with Hospital Policies and Procedures, and within the scope of the State of Colorado Nurse Practice Act.
  • Demonstrates qualities that advance high standards of care and models positive behaviors for peers and subordinates.  Exemplifies respect and tolerance for age, gender, race, and choice of lifestyle.
  • Supervises staff in manner that maximizes each staff member’s strengths and skills.
  • Serves as a clinical resource person to staff members in their daily activities.
  • Evaluates the work performance of all assigned staff on an ongoing basis.
  • Remains focused on client-centered care during crisis situations.
  • Utilizes the nursing process in the evaluation of patient issues.

·         Maintains communication between Hospital Administration, Nursing Administration, and nursing staff working on alternative shifts.

·         Maintains awareness of performance improvement programs.

·         Assesses and approves hospital admissions according to Hospital admission guidelines.

·         Represents Hospital in promotion of positive guest relations.

·         Assumes responsibility for professional development and ongoing education.

·         Knowledgeable of and able to implement safety education regarding disaster plan, fire safety, body mechanics, and hazardous waste disposal.

·         Promotes a positive working environment.  Supports and supervises staff, and complies with Hospital policies.

·         Demonstrates required attendance and reliability

·         Maintains a professional appearance and attitude at all times.

·         Promotes safety by attending mandatory inservices and complies with all safety measures initiated by the facility



Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

·         Current licensure as a Registered Nurse through the State of Colorado Board of Registered Nursing.

·         Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing or baccalaureate program. 

·         Three (3) years of clinical experience, preferrably in psychiatric nursing, may include Charge Nurse experience. 

·         Must have thorough working knowledge of Hospital, Nursing, and Management of Human Resources policies and procedures, with demonstrated ability to use skills in clinical and managerial situations.



  • Must be able to perform concentrated and/or complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and/or highly technical situations;
  • Must be able to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;
  • Must be able to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;
  • Must be able to comprehend and perform oral and written instructions and procedures;
  • Must be able to collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion;
  • Must be capable of adapting to varying workloads an work assignments on a constant basis;
  • Must have effective comprehensive reading skills, and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must have math skills to enable calculation of drug dosages.
