Job Description

This position is based at the Summit Program within the Palmer Residential Treatment Center, an inpatient psychiatric treatment program for preteen and adolescent boys. Residents at the Summit learn healthy social, recreational and life skills needed to be successful in the community and at home. The Summit is truly the halfway point of a hike up a mountain, or a journey to recovery in our program, but it is the graduation point and what a patient should aim to achieve.

The Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering quality general and psychiatric nursing care to patients with emotional or psychiatric disorders; serves actively and constructively as a member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team, supporting the organization and program philosophy of care; ensuring the safety and well-being of each patient. The Registered Nurse:

  • Assesses new patients within 24 hours of admission through a systematic process of interaction with the patient, their significant others or families, and the appropriate health care providers.
  • Collects and analyzes data regarding the patient’s physical, psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, and anticipated discharge planning needs and responds to needs assessment calls when necessary.
  • Develops a comprehensive, integrated outline of care and updates master treatment plans, special programs, and problem sheets.
  • Assists in developing goals and interventions; gathering relevant data and communicating it to the treatment team.
  • Establishes effective discharge plans, individualized and relevant to the needs of patients and significant others.
  • Oversees general health of residents; provides effective, timely assessment and basic nursing care as needed and assigned. Works to ensure effective, timely care referral as needed and assigned to ensure resident health and safety per standard of care.
  • Maintains effective communication with all units and departments. Works to ensure e-mail status remains current and active as needed.
  • Maintains designated lines of authority and supervises direct and delegated patient care as required.
  • Participates in implementing and managing the therapeutic system and other applicable facets of behaviorally-oriented treatment programs.
  • Implements crisis prevention and intervention procedures as required and follows correct protocols for crisis management and demonstrates skills in defusing potentially combative or aggressive behaviors; distinguishes correctly between psychotic behavior and self-control problems, manipulation, or rebellious behaviors.
  • Demonstrates sound knowledge of psychotropic medications and other medications commonly used with psychiatric pediatric and adult patients.
  • Ensures that orders of seclusions & restraints are promptly and correctly followed; provides effective oversight, ensures correct implementation, follow up and documentation of all seclusion and restraints as needed and required.
  • Ensures that rounds and interval checks are properly made and documented and that problems are reported in a timely manner.
  • Assists in the selection and orientation of qualified personnel to provide optimum patient care.
  • Participates in in-service programs and takes a leadership role in maintaining therapeutic milieu; providing effective oversight, engagementsafety assurance, while working to ensure a therapeutic environment of care.
  • Provides guidelines/direction to staff regarding care required; provides structure to the units by ensuring program schedules are implemented.
  • Documents care provision and treatment progress in accurate timely manner as needed and assigned.
  • Assures that all psychiatric mental health and/or pediatric health standards are being met.
  • Attends mandatory monthly nurse meetings as an active participant.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Must have an Associate's degree or higher in Nursing as well as valid State of Alaska RN License.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS: Must have a working knowledge of basic nurse care and care standards related to the treatment of pediatric and adult psychiatric populations; be able to perform assignments with minimal supervision; work successfully under highly stressful conditions; make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles; collaborate with other multidisciplinary team members in an appropriate fashion; adapt to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis; have effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal; have excellent assessment skills; and have a working knowledge of computers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITION: The Registered Nurse must be able to execute the patient de-escalation methods, both verbal and physical; complete new hire requirements such as State of Alaska Background Check and Drug Testing; demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training; be certified in CPR and Handle with Care Training within the first month of employment and annually thereafter; complete all required mandatory in-services annually; be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire; PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray tri-annually thereafter; and be at least 21 years of age.

GENERAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Working conditions for all employees are as follows, but are not limited to a psychiatric hospital setting: risk involved in the event of aggressive patient(s); workload may include day, evening, night, weekend, and/or holiday shifts. Employees may occasionally be exposed to blood borne pathogens and loud noises. Mental demands described herein are representative of those which must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, but are not limited to the ability to remain calm in stressful environments; and the emotional stability, physical stamina, and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requirements include, but are not limited to the ability to communicate effectively with employees; the ability to effectively utilize communication equipment; the physical agility to manage cleaning equipment; the ability to read, write; frequently utilize physical ability for standing or sitting for long periods of time; regularly utilize physical ability for speaking, hearing, and seeing with correction for close and distance vision, color discrimination, peripheral vision, depth perception and focusing ability; speaking and hearing may be necessary for conversing with and assessing employees; be able to ascend/descend stairs and ramps; be able to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist; bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s); be able to extend hands and arms in any direction; be able to use upper and lower extremities to exert force in a pulling or pushing motion; be able to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; be able to raise objects from a lower to higher position or from side-to-side; be subjected to environmental and hazardous conditions, as activities occur inside and outside with a variety of physical conditions; be able to concentrate amidst distractions; must be able to perform work of a repetitive nature; must respond calmly to potentially volatile clients. Mental demands include but are not limited to emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.
