Senior Technical Leader – Fuel Performance/Reliability

Charlotte, NC

Position Summary

  • Plans and manages technical R&D work in the area of nuclear fuel performance and reliability, with emphasis on global utility/plant operations (PWR fuel desired).
  • Provides technical expertise to other EPRI nuclear sector programs, especially in the Fuels and Chemistry Department.
  • Interfaces with a diverse set of stakeholders including utilities, fuel suppliers/vendors, national labs, universities, regulatory agencies and contractors/consultants.
  • Interfaces on a diverse set of technical topics including core design, thermal hydraulics, fuel material-water interactions, structural mechanics, fuel performance/reliability, and high performance computing.
  • Gets buy-in from key internal and external stakeholders.
  • Defines approaches / projects to address industry needs.
  • Individual contributor.

Job Functions

  • Plans, designs, and controls the progress of complex project work within the technical department to meet member objectives and priorities; prepares and presents research reports.
  • Provides high-level engineering efforts to support requirements in development and design and provides guidance to junior staff
  • Influences project teams in the engineering aspects of the technical work.
  • Coordinates and facilitates technical engineering related communications with the client
  • Leads proposal efforts and new promotional work.
  • Preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations. Acts as technical specialist for projects or project tasks.
  • Continuing to lead national and international technical networks with manufacturers, consultants, academia, and research organizations.
  • Works independently on technical activities without direct supervision


Education and Years of Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required; advanced technical degree preferred.
  • 8-10 or more years of research and development project and promotional experience, including development of advanced concepts or equivalent experience (PWR fuel desired).

  • Understands global industry needs and operations; ability to translate research results and implement in utility/plant procedures and processes.

  • Works well in a team environment.
  • Is willing to travel about 25% time, including international destinations.
  • Ability to recognize strategic issues and projects and build collaborative projects.
  • Experience in successful proposal preparation, and marketing activities.
  • Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives using creative imaginative solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Increasing technical depth/breadth to become a subject matter expert

  • Communicates project results to advisors and members, may communicate project status to Sector Council
  • Meets with member organizations and external stakeholders in support of Sector activities or to communicate Program content and strategy

The Ideal Candidate

  • Strong understanding of light-water reactor fuel performance/reliability, core design, thermal hydraulics, and water chemistry; utility and nuclear plant experience preferred (PWR desired).
  • Familiarity with industry issues related to in-reactor fuel performance/reliability and used fuel / high level waste management.
  • Experience in applying advanced modeling and simulation techniques and methodologies.
  • Ability to communicate with technical, managerial, and executive teams about the status of complex projects.
