As a Strategy Consultant at IBM, you will help reinvent businesses and industries by developing and utilizing specialized knowledge of industry-specific and cross-industry competitive strategies. You'll manage complex components of an engagement, working closely with clients and their customers to understand their pain points. Your strategic recommendations will drive change in a digitally-enabled era and give you the opportunity to collaborate with highly talented IBMers. Are you ready?

Your Role and Responsibilities

IBMs Watson Internet of ThingsStrategy and Portfolio Planning team has a mission to create new markets by applying technology to mission critical business issues. As a key growth area for IBMs strategic imperatives, which include Cognitive Computing, IoT (Internet of Things), Healthcare, Commerce, Security, and Analytics the team is on the forefront of IBMs growth initiatives. The team includes highly qualified individuals, with backgrounds in both technical and business domains.

Successful candidates will be a highly intelligent, and energetic individual. You will be a team-player, with demonstrated potential to work in a business role upon graduation. You should be an outstanding listener, highly motivated, with emerging judgment to do what is right for IBM and IBM Research. You should also possess the ability to dive into details while maintaining a big picture view.

Ideally, you will have worked in a previous internship experience in consulting, product management or business development function at an established technology company or a tech start-up. You should have some technical understanding of the strategic areas of Cognitive, IoT, Security, and Analytics. Also, have experience about how to strategically create market reports and business cases by analyzing markets and by speaking with existing and potential clients. You should have the ability to 'sell' the analysis to senior executives in Business Development, Offering Management, Strategy, and IBM.

You will be assigned to work in a certain industry (e.g. Industrial, Facilities Management, Automotive) or Technology (e.g. IoT, Enterprise Asset Management, Cognitive Analytics). Within this industry or technology, you will be expected to identify specific offerings that IBM could create. For those offerings, you will be expected to create the justification (i.e. business case) and present it to senior executives in Strategy and Business Development. You will work with product designers and developers to define the offering. They will identify key strategic partners and, if feasible, participate in client meetings. A rewarding internship will be one where they feel they know what it takes to 'build a business' within a larger Corporation.

Candidates with a Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline and pursuing a MBA are preferred.

Work location will be either Raleigh, NC or Armonk, NY.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
  • Proven analytical and communication skills
  • Ability to understand market trends and emerging business models
  • Some familiarity with one or more of the following functions: product development, business development, marketing and sales functions
  • Adept at using Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
  • Experience at a start-up as an intern or full-time employee
  • Interest in pursuing a career in product management, marketing, sales, business development
  • Some level of familiarity with cutting edge technologies such as Cognitive, Cloud, Analytics, Mobile, Security
  • Direct experience with one or more of the following functions: product development, business development, marketing and sales functions
  • Ability to create business cases, analyze industry trends and create market reports
  • Undergraduate degree in a technical discipline, pursuing MBA
