MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Assistant Director of Accounting (Assistant Director) of the Montana State University Alumni Foundation (Alumni Foundation) prepares journal entries, reconciles balance sheet accounts, and performs general ledger data reviews for the Alumni Foundation, its subsidiaries, and other related entities. In addition, the Assistant Director prepares year-end Excel schedules to prepare for the annual independent audit and preparation of tax returns.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare and enter monthly journal entries in accordance with GAAP.
- Assist in maintaining general ledger accuracy, performing reviews and corrections.
- Reconcile bank and investment accounts, monthly or quarterly as required.
- Approve disbursement vouchers for payment to ensure accurate coding.
- Apply payments to open accounts receivable invoices.
- Research accounting issues and recommend solutions.
- Create and run queries and reports from the accounting system as needed.
- Assist in responding to management and staff accounting questions and requests.
- Prepare annual audit and tax work papers in Excel, pull transaction samples, and assemble other documentation needed.
- Draft and document accounting procedures.
- Provide back-up as needed for gift batch approvals and fund administration.
- Affect and maintain a professional, proactive, positive, highly collaborative, and performance-centric work environment.
- Assist with special projects and other duties as requested.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Strong knowledge of and ability to independently apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) standards.
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Excel.
- Ability to learn new software and tools to create task efficiencies.
- Ability to analyze and interpret accounting information and various policies and procedures.
- Ability to identify and solve problems, research and analyze data and account errors, and reconcile accounts.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey accounting information in a clear and concise manner that can be understood by non-accountants.
- Well-organized, efficient, able to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Ability to complete quality work with a high degree of accuracy.
- Effective interpersonal skills including ability to work with a diverse group of individuals in a positive team atmosphere and to establish and maintain working relationships.
- Ability to perform work with a high standard of professional ethics.
