Position Summary:

The department of Foundational Sciences and Humanities in The Chicago Medical School is seeking an Assistant Professor of Microbiology and Immunology. This individual will primarily be responsible for teaching microbiology in the systems-based medical curriculum. The individual will also be working as part of a team to develop interactive and didactic team-based learning activities as well as interacting with and mentoring medical students. Faculty duties will also include maintaining a viable scholarly research agenda and engaging in institutional and professional service.


Required Education & Experience:
  • A PhD or MD degree or equivalent.
  • Expertise in microbiology, immunology, infectious disease, or a closely related field.
  • Significant (2+ years) teaching experience as an instructor or director of a course in a related discipline at the undergraduate or graduate level.
  • Demonstrated productivity and contribution (e.g. presentations, publications, patents, etc.) to a relevant professional field.
  • Established track record of directing/overseeing student trainees at the undergraduate or graduate level within a research or clinical setting.
  • Experience in the development and delivery of effective lecture materials.
  • Experience in interactive approaches to instruction.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Excellent interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clinical and basic science faculty.
  • Knowledge of educational theory and methodology.
  • Ability to translate core competencies and learning objectives into an effective medical education curriculum.
  • Understanding of interprofessional medical education implementation methods.
  • Demonstrated productivity and contribution (e.g. presentations, publications, patents, etc.) to a professional field.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in computer skills, i.e. Microsoft Office.
  • Display professionalism for the college in all communication and interaction.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and privacy.
  • Ability to prioritize and organize numerous and varied assignments.
  • High-energy, versatile, self-directed.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with medical or other educational or healthcare-related accrediting bodies
  • Experience in medical education curriculum development, including team-based learning.
  • Experience with bacteriology or microbial pathogenesis teaching
  • Experience with bacteriology or microbial pathogenesis research
  • Excellent leadership and administrative skills, a demonstrated record of faculty mentorship and involvement in faculty development, and experience in medical and/or graduate education.
  • Experience in the development and implementation of courses in microbiology, bacteriology, and microbial pathogenesis and related topics and demonstrated excellence in delivering course content to medical students.
