ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR

California State University, Los Angeles, invites applications for the above Administrator I position.

The University: California State University, Los Angeles, under the leadership of President, William A. Covino, is one of 23 campuses of the California State University system. Founded in 1947, the University is in the city of Los Angeles, adjacent to the San Gabriel Valley, and has more than 28,000 students who reflect the rich ethnic diversity of the area.

The  Position: Under the direction of the Director of Risk Management and Environmental, Health, and Safety (RH/EHS), the Associate Director oversees and directs the University’s RM/EHS staff, operations, and programs. The incumbent in coordination with the Director, helps support and develop the RM/EHS team, which is composed of professional staff, administrative staff, and student assistants. Responsibilities include oversight of the University’s risk management programs involving loss control, claims management, and insurance management, including property, automobile, travel and miscellaneous risk reduction programs; timely performance of tasks that may be sensitive and confidential in support of the University and/or outside parties’ inquiries; planning, developing, implementing, and maintaining the various programs necessary to maintain a safe and healthy environment for faculty, staff, students, and the general public; ensuring the University’s operation complies with campus health and safety policies and standards including California Occupational Safety and Health Act (Cal/OSHA) and other applicable environmental health rules, regulations and laws; serving as a liaison with the Chancellor’s Office, other California State University campuses, and state and federal regulatory agencies; working with campus constituents to implement reasonable measure and best practice for the safe active management of campus activities and appropriate limit exposure to hazards; actively coordinate with various campus departments to assist in program development, training and monitoring compliance; interpreting and analyzing pertinent provisions of federal, state, local laws, codes, and regulations; evaluating and analyzing campus activities in implementing programs; and conducting routine assessments and inspections of campus facilities to identify unsafe, non-compliant, or unhealthful conditions, and develop innovative and cost effective for the implementation of RM/EHS. The incumbent is also responsible for RM/EHS student assistants, interns, and volunteers; serving as an active member of the University’s Emergency Response Team, including the use of full face negative pressure respirators and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and responding to emergencies with potential chemical, biological and physical hazards; and performing occasional moderate to heavy physical activity.

Requirements

Required Qualifications and Experience: The incumbent must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a job-related field. Through knowledge of applicable federal, state and local safety environmental laws and regulations. Must possess effective written, interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills. Ability to: develop effective programs in a higher education environment; respond to emergencies and work with potential chemical, biological, physical hazards and claims; communicate with discretion, tact, and professionalism, on sensitive and confidential matters; achieve mastery of complex substantive areas through individual effort and study; work timely and effectively on matters requiring independent judgment; exercise initiative in carrying out assigned projects; organize, schedule, coordinate, and implement departmental/campus initiatives with minimal direct supervision; and meet deadlines and work effectively in a team environment. Demonstrated interest and ability to work with an ethnically diverse and culturally pluralistic student body and staff. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the CSU. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current CSU employees who apply for the position.

Desired Qualifications: Two years of managerial experience. Experience in an institution of higher education. Certified as an Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Safety Professional (CSP), or Associate in Risk Management (ARM). Proficiency using Microsoft Office.

Compensation: Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications. A comprehensive benefits package is provided.

Appointment: The Administrator I appointment will be made under the guidelines for management and supervisory employees of the California State University. All rights and benefits associated with this appointment are governed by the Management Personnel Plan.

This position is a "designated position" in the California State University's Conflict of Interest Code. The successful candidate accepting this position is required to file Conflict of Interest forms subject to the regulations of the Fair Political Practices Commission.
