We're seeking an experienced health lawyer to be in-house at a growing integrated physician healthcare delivery system located in Southern California. The position will include working with key leaders of the organization, collaborating with colleagues across the nation, and providing advice on contract structure, negotiations, and regulatory compliance for network providers and clinical practices. Successful candidate will be part of a collaborative team of attorneys and support staff in a growing health care business.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Providing legal services and related support to Optum care delivery organizations in the Southern California Market
  • Collaborating with colleagues across the Optum and UnitedHealth Group legal departments
  • Proactively identifying and resolving legal and related matters impacting Optum
  • Advocating on behalf of the care delivery organizations on emerging legislation
  • Assisting in the review, and negotiation of various payor, provider, ancillary service agreements associated with the Optum care delivery organizations
  • Developing best practices for addressing legal, regulatory and business risks
  • Working in partnership with the Optum Compliance and Privacy teams
  • Counseling senior management on strategic business initiatives
  • Strategizing and resolving pre-litigation matters
  • Managing, engaging and strategizing with outside counsel, in collaboration with the Optum litigation team, regarding litigation matters
  • Fostering regulatory relationships, including with the California Department of Managed Health Care
  • Interpreting regulations, identifying potential impact on the care delivery organizations and identifying a path forward
  • Assisting with Mergers and Acquisitions

The successful candidate must possess strong verbal and written communication skills, sound judgment and business instincts. The ability to lead people and change is also critical. The ability to operate in a matrixed environment will be important qualities for the successful candidate.

Required Qualifications:

  • Law degree from an accredited law school
  • Licensed to practice law in California or the ability to waive into California prior to commencement of employment
  • 5+ years of experience representing integrated systems, physician practice groups or provider networks.
  • Strong knowledge of state and federal health laws, including Knox Keene Act and Regulations, corporate practice of medicine, anti-kickback, Stark, and privacy laws
  • If you need to enter a work site for any reason, you will be required to screen for symptoms using the ProtectWell mobile app, Interactive Voice Response (i.e., entering your symptoms via phone system) or similar UnitedHealth Group-approved symptom screener. When in a UnitedHealth Group building, employees are required to wear a mask in common areas. In addition, employees must comply with any state and local masking orders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with limited/restricted Knox-Keene entities, independent practice associations, medical groups and accountable care organizations
