Overview

As a Marketing Team member, you would assist in leveraging data metrics to develop methods to strategically maximize the profitability of a specific brand category in our business. In representing Smithfield, Eckrich, Nathan's Famous, or any of our brands, you will collaborate cross-functionally across the company from our sales team to our business management operations to deliver the best product to our customers and consumers.

The Category Specialist will have demonstrated a foundation of Category Management principles and actively assists in analyzing consumer, category, customer and market data in order to help the Smithfield team build sound business recommendations and is routinely developing high quality presentations. Focused on working with Sales to identify mutually beneficial opportunities that support both Smithfield brand growth and retailer category growth by working closely with Smithfield's Sales team and periodic interactions with our retailers. This will be achieved by utilizing Retailers' data systems and marrying with third party data sources (IRI, Dunnhumby, Spectrum, Nielsen, Spectra) to surface potential opportunities and insights and to leverage fact based information to suggest ways to win in the marketplace. This person will start to be viewed as a Category Expert by our Retailers for conducting first-hand analysis of internal retailer sales and consumer information to provide fact based winning assortment, shelving, pricing and promotion recommendations and the subsequent score carding of business results. The Category Specialist will start to become the day-to-day analytical point of contact for our Retailers and be able to interface with the customer (Buyers to Senior Management) to represent Smithfield Foods. As such, it is always imperative that this person have a likeable communication style (even under periodic instances involving difficult business situations) and exhibit teamwork competencies to represent Smithfield in the best possible light.



Responsibilities

Fact Based Sales Support at the request of Sales and our retailers, integrates both internal and third-party information from many sources and proposes actionable insights and recommendations in support of category and team initiatives. You will increasingly become a "trusted category advisor". This work includes, but is not limited to, new product introductions, pricing analyses, seasonal reviews and programs, promotional planning, and evaluation. This may grow into a position requiring working "onsite" at our Retailers.
Sales Reporting and Interpretation works within the current reporting structure and starts to develop analyses tools to assist the team with fact-based recommendations based on category and consumer trends.
Continuous Improvement A primary focus of this position is continuing to learn and exhibit a natural curiosity about the business at hand. Demonstrating ways to grow our capabilities and processes to drive superior results will be a critical success factor in this role.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions.

Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university in Marketing, Business Administration, or related field and 2+ years' relevant Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience, required.
Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) experience in sales, marketing, category management or trade marketing, preferred.
Experience with and understanding of category management processes is preferred.
1+ years of experience working with syndicated data (IRI, Nielsen, etc.), preferred.
Ability to synthesize data from multiple resources to build actionable recommendations.
Advanced analytical skills using PC based applications (Windows, Excel, PowerPoint) with emphasis on Advanced Excel Pivot Tables to database queries required to manipulate & synthesize data from multiple resources to build actionable recommendations.
Demonstrated strengths in analysis and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate with enthusiasm and impact both verbally and written.
Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.
