Job Requirements

Surgical Technologists are individuals with specialized education who function as members of the surgical team in the role of scrub person. Working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and Surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Works in a partnership with a RN; does not assume an independent assignment. Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement initiatives in collaboration with other health team members.  Supports an organizational culture for Service Excellence and practices the Service Excellence Standards to all customer groups.

II.         HOUSEWIDE REQUIREMENTS - Meets the organization’s expectations regarding initial and annual requirements.




  1. Assists the RN with implementation of an age appropriate plan of care through tasks routinely delegated by the RN and tasks delegated by the RN based on patient’s condition and the individual’s skills.

  2. Demonstrates the ability to first scrub simple surgical cases applicable to the Tech level.

  3. Demonstrates ability to second scrub cases applicable to Tech level.

  4. Demonstrates both knowledge and technical expertise regarding sterile processing.

  5. Demonstrates both knowledge and technical expertise regarding procedures, equipment, supplies, instruments, and surgical sequence for all procedures applicable to the Tech level.

  6. Demonstrates ability to use prior knowledge in adapting to and learning new procedures.

  7. Assists the RN to provide an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors, and employees.




  9. Meets all regulations from AAMI, AORN, OSHA, CDC, and JC.

  10. Provides an environment conducive to safety for patients, visitors, and employees.Will

          report risks to patient safety and implement the appropriate precautions.  Will comply with

          appropriate and approved standards.

    Physical and Sensory Requirements:

    1.         Ability to converse, read, and write in English.

    2.         Ability to communicate with patients, families, staff, physicians, vendors, and others.

    3.         Ability to remain calm under stress.

    4.         Ability to respond to pages.

    5.         Ability to repeatedly twist, squat, and stoop

    6.         Bending, lifting (25 lbs. minimum), grasping, fine hand coordination, pushing, pulling, squatting, and prolonged walking and standing.

    7.         Exposure to infectious organisms, agents and toxic chemicals.

    8.         Ability to make decisions within the limitations of the job.
