Position Summary: 


The Chief Medical Officer is responsible for developing and driving the organization's clinical vision and strategy in coordination with senior members of ProHealthCare leadership - and ensuring alignment with OptumCare's vision and objectives. The CMO is responsible for delivering on initiatives relating to optimizing ProHealthCare's scope of services, medical risk management, clinical quality, patient satisfaction and provider engagement. The CMO is responsible for developing and leading a high performing, scaled provider organization spanning Long Island and the boroughs of New York City.  The CMO will be responsible for introducing innovative new services across the platform, be an effective change agent, be able to gain followership from the provider organization and work with payer partners to address their members' needs. The CMO will represent the business on the OptumCare Physician Executive Council and collaborate with Optum physician leaders on strategic initiatives.


Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Responsible for contributing to the success of the quadruple aim - reducing cost of care; increasing quality outcomes; increasing patient satisfaction; increasing provider satisfaction
  • Sets the overall strategic direction and priorities for the medical organization, based on the business objectives
  • Provides leadership for strategic medical initiatives relating to the business plans and monitors progress against goals. For example, acquiring other primary and specialty care practices in strategic locations, and establishing partnerships with other CDOs
  • Recommends strategies and innovative solutions to drive profitability and growth for the business
  • Advises on decisions relating to scope of services and their requirements
  • Collaborates with other CDO leaders on joint initiatives and opportunities for mutual success
  • Drives quality programs and standards across the company for the provider organization, including, but not limited to, PQRS and HEDIS
  • Assists the Compliance Department in establishing and maintaining accreditation of centers
  • Formulates policies and objectives for medical programs, ensures the medical staff's practices and behaviors meet ethical standards and are in compliance with policies
  • Provides the final medical decision on medical issues requiring input
  • Sets strategic direction for all provider staffing (i.e. labor model), meeting multiple objectives - clinical scope optimization, expense management, provider satisfaction, patient satisfaction and quality requirements
  • Establishes hiring qualifications and performance standards for the medical organization
  • Represents the views, needs concerns, and policy proposals of the medical staff to the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Leadership Team
  • Provides change leadership to the medical organization to enable their success
  • Owns the clinical budget, including staffing, equipment needs, etc.
  • Leads and participates in the periodic review of practice management and clinical workflow across functions, e.g., reception, telephone triage, patient flow, outreach services, laboratory, follow-up on missed appointments, referral tracking, etc.
  • Responsible for patient satisfaction and for helping the organization reach its patient satisfaction goals. Utilizes data to shape strategies to drive increasing patient satisfaction; functions as escalation point for patient complaints
  • Participates in the development of health risk management protocols
  • Advocates for the Centers and serve as a liaison to local and state professional societies, as well as to health officials, organizations, and health institutions, as appropriate
  • Participates in the recruitment and development of medical leaders
  • Serves and/or assists as a primary rater (or review officer where additional levels of supervision exist) for all clinical personnel evaluations; recommends or participates in final determination of disciplinary actions and terminations as well as nomination of individuals for awards
  • Represents the company in community organization activities and other outside entities including payer and provider organizations
