The Collection Management Librarian manages all aspects of the Library's collection of print, media and online materials for book, serial and electronic resources including all aspects of technical services and database systems that support library functions. This position is responsible for the selection and maintenance of the Library's physical and digital resources through collection development, acquisitions, cataloging, supervising their preparation for circulation and access, discoverability through the online catalog and discovery layer and for the administration of these systems. The LIbrarian manages the Library's Artists' Books Collection. Additionally, the Librarian will participate in collaborative work with other staff members to support library services and workflows at large. The Collection Management Librarian must be sensitive to college needs, employee and student goodwill, and overall brand equity of MCAD as an employer and educational institution.


  • Collection Management:
    • Selects material in all formats for the Library collection in conjunction with the Library Director.
    • Orders new materials and resources and directs their processing for circulation and online access.
    • Catalogs new materials (copy cataloging, but some limited original cataloging). Creates and applies local metadata conventions and documents the application of LC classification and LCSH conventions in ClassWeb. Establishes authority control and stays informed of developments in cataloging standards: RDA, MARC21, and subject heading application LCGFT, LCSH.
    • Supervises and trains library staff assisting with collection management activities including the Technical Services Assistant, the Circulation Assistant (Evening) and student workers. Reviews workflows regularly and incorporates new or existing ILS functionalities that improve processes. Maintains up to date documentation of Technical Services workflows and best practices.
    • Manages the preservation and replacement of existing materials. Participates in regular evaluation of the current collection and the removal of outdated or unused material.
  • Systems Management:
    • Manages the daily and overall operations of the Library's integrated library system's modules for acquisitions, cataloging, serials, online catalog, discovery layer and online subscription integrations.
    • Acts as primary liaison with our library consortium support, keeping current on enhancements to the ILS and discovery system and communicating updates and changes to library staff.
    • Works with campus IT department to troubleshoot software and access issues with our ILS, discovery layer, online subscriptions, link resolvers, authentication software
    • Manages critical components of the electronic resources life cycle: implements and maintains online resource subscriptions, conducts troubleshooting and works with vendors to resolve access issues
    • Collaborates with other staff members on maintaining the Library's web and social media presence.
    • Keeps current on new trends and opportunities to increase and expand our resource integrations into additional systems and increase access and use of Library resources
  • Artists' Books Collection:
    • Oversee Artists' Book Collection including selection, acquisitions, cataloging, photo documentation and promotion. Creates digital access to images in the collection.
    • Assists students and faculty with the use of the Artists Books including the creation of online and print promotional materials.
    • Supervises Artists Books graduate assistant.
  • Outreach to Faculty and Students:
    • Carries out annual library events: book sales, artist book contest. Assist with other outreach projects as needed.
    • Engages with faculty and students to obtain their recommendations for collection development and to promote existing library resources.
    • Selects and presents Library materials to classes relevant to their course assignments as requested by faculty.
    • Provides individual reference assistance.
  • Additional Responsibilities :
    • Works with Library Director to establish departmental priorities, policies and procedures, as well as long-range planning and supporting the integration of new technologies in the Library.
    • Facilitate payment of all department invoices and maintain current totals in the Library budget spreadsheet. Represents the Library with vendors. Orders supplies for the LibraryPerforms other duties as assigned by the Library Director.Represents MCAD's vision, purpose, and values in day to day work and interactions with MCAD students, staff, faculty, and campus guests, as well as the greater community.


This position supervises the work of the Technical Services/Archives Assistant as well as directing some tasks of the Circulation Assistant (Evenings) and student workers.


Master's Degree In Library Science degree from American Library Association (ALA) Accredited program, or equivalent, required. Bachelor's Degree or significant coursework in Art History, Studio Arts, or Design strongly preferred


  • Two or more years cataloging or technical services experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of art and/or design history or practice.

  • Demonstrated skills in working flexibly, independently and collaboratively with colleagues in a rapidly changing user-oriented environment.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new standards and technologies and a willingness to explore and implement new practices to enhance services and complete tasks more efficiently. Ability to train other library staff in new practices.
  • Knowledge of current cataloging practices and metadata standards and schema, MARC21, LCC, LCSH, RDA, and Dublin Core. Experience working with OCLC Connexion required
  • Familiarity with integrated library systems, discovery tools, link resolvers, proxy authentication systems, and electronic acquisitions and resource management. Experience with Alma/Primo and Ebsco preferred.
  • Working knowledge of electronic resource licensing and ebook acquisitions preferred
  • Experience with a Higher Education environment preferred.
  • Supervisory experience preferred
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, project management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication and collaborate across departments.


This position has been identified as security sensitive and will require a background check. At the discretion of the college, various background checks may be done during the course of employment.


This position operates in a professional office environment. This position requires the ability and willingness to closely partner with team members and colleagues in other departments. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms. This position requires occasional crouching, pushing a hand cart and overhead reaching. Must be able to lift 30 pounds Upon request, reasonable accommodation will be provided to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
