Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services is the only freestanding, full-service psychiatric hospital in the Birmingham Area. It draws on a rich tradition while staying on the cutting edge of new developments in treating psychiatric illness and enhancing mental health. We treat mental illness, emotional problems, and adults with chemical dependency.

Hill Crest BHS currently has a Director ofHealth Information Managementposition open. This person plans and directs a program of Medical Records Administration and maintenance for medical care histories for the facility. Work is performed in accordance with established professional policy, procedures, practices, regulatory requirements, and accrediting body standards.

Duties and Accountabilities:

  • Demonstrates knowledge, effectiveness and efficiency in management skills.
  • Directs HIM Department functions to comply with both hospital and regulatory agency standards.
  • Reviews departmental policies annually.
  • Plans storage/retrieval system for active/inactive medical records.
  • Responsible for the safety and security of patients' medical records.
  • Follows hospital and regulatory agency security and confidentiality guidelines.
  • Assures appropriate release of Protected Health Information (PHI).
  • Continuously assesses and improves quality of care and services provided.
  • Determines the qualifications and competence of departmental personnel.
  • Compiles monthly statistical reports.
  • Serves on Hospital Committees as appropriate.
  • Serves as role model in response to departmental changes and new challenges.

Job Requirements

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of ICD-9-CM and DSM-IV coding principles and guidelines.
  • Knowledge of federal, state and payer specific regulations, policies and compliance standards pertaining to documentation, coding and billing.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of the principles and practices of Health Information Management and of medical terminology and coding systems.
  • Graduate of an approved HIM program and has successfully received Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHT) credentials.
  • Experience in HIM Administration to include a minimum of 3 years experience as a HIM Director required.
