Reporting to the SVP, Development, the Director of Institutional Giving will work closely with the Human Rights First leadership and policy teams to build institutional partnerships in support of the organizations mission to empower Americans to fight for justice in our own communities and around the world. As a member of the development management team, he or she will be responsible for achieving annual revenue goals by developing and executing a comprehensive plan for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and acknowledging foundation and other institutional funders in support of priorities including repairing the asylum system, fighting against systemic injustice, working for accountability for human rights abusers, curbing extremism in the United States and the use and abuse of technology. In addition to foundation partnerships, this individual will oversee the government grant portfolio in support of our Refugee Representation program. This individual will thoughtfully engage with the Board of Directors, President & CEO, COO, and program staff at all levels to develop and execute specific strategies build strategic relationships with institutional staff and stakeholders.



  • Manage all aspects of grant support from public and private foundations, and other institutions.

  • Working closely with the Refugee Representation team, oversee the government grants portfolio.

  • Craft a long-range strategic foundation plan to grow institutional sources of support; identifying new opportunities with existing funders as well as new prospect funders.

  • Develop and execute proposal concepts with Board of Directors, executive and program staff.

  • Write and/or oversee the writing and editing of grant proposals, acknowledgements, and reports, and work with the finance and operation teams on the preparation of proposal budgets and financial documents.

  • Work with program and communications staff to create and implement foundation communication strategy.

  • Facilitate and cultivate relationships between internal program and executive staff and foundation staff.

  • Track all aspects of the foundation fundraising process from identification to reporting.

  • Work closely with SVP of Development and Director of Finance to track revenue goals, reporting on a weekly and monthly basis.

  • Other duties as requested based on department and/or organizational need.



  • Bachelors Degree or commiserate experience and at least seven years or more in foundation fundraising at senior level and/or human rights-based work.

  • High level grant management experience and familiarity with the human rights, civil rights or civil liberties institutional funding community.

  • Experience with government grants a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience in long-term strategic planning and the ability to work closely with executive and program staff.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Excellent management skills.

  • Superior organizational skills.

  • Ability to inspire and motivate others to achieve common goals.

  • Proficiency in MS Office applications, with particular emphasis on Excel and Word, as well as Web-based research.

  • Experience with database management required.

  • Ability and desire to meet with existing and prospective institutional supporters.

  • Limited travel.
