Worldwide Research, Development, and Medical (WRDM) is recruiting a team experienced in clinical uses of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and predictive modeling. The successful candidate will help us derive insights from Pfizer's proprietary data and external data to generate hypothesis focused on clinical development and precision medicine approaches. This focus will be on testing strategies for patient segmentation and potential subpopulations.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to work at the interface of machine learning (ML) and Quantitative Systems Pharmacology (QSP). QSP is a discipline that uses multi-scale, mechanistic mathematical models and disease platforms to enhance the robustness and quality of decision-making from exploratory research through clinical development. The successful candidate will work to combine existing or novel QSP models with deep learning for clinical applications.

The candidate will help us derive insights from Pfizer's proprietary data and external data to develop a deeper understanding of physiological systems and diseases. The goal is to generate mechanistically driven hypotheses focused on precision medicine approaches. The candidate will partner with clinical experts, AI scientists, biologists, and clinical and quantitative systems pharmacologists to inform clinical study design decisions, including endpoint selection, individualized dosing strategies and/or patient stratification.


+ Develop cutting-edge, mechanistically informed machine learning frameworks to gain insight into causal relationships between drug targets and clinical responses

+ Serve as AI/ML subject matter expert and point-of-contact to QSP group to solve challenging problems in drug discovery and development; contribute to preclinical and clinical study design and mechanistic interpretation of complex data

+ Analyze and interpret Pfizer proprietary and external data sets in the context of disease mechanisms and pathways; develop a deep disease understanding and knowledge base for understanding heterogeneity of treatment effects


+ PhD in applied mathematics, statistics, machine learning, computer science, physics, or related discipline with strong background in mathematical, statistical, and numerical methods.

+ Hands-on experience with development of machine learning frameworks applied to biomedical problems, or data-driven mechanistic modeling of biological/physiological systems is required.

+ Computational fluency and hands-on experience in at least one programming language, e.g., Python, Julia, MATLAB, R, etc.


+ Postdoctoral experience strongly preferred

+ Experience with deep learning methods applied to longitudinal time series data is desirable

+ In-depth understanding of theory, principles, and statistical aspects of mathematical modeling and simulation, including numerical methods, parameter estimation/optimization, differential equations, and how these can be applied in the development of models of biological or physiological systems

+ Familiarity with high-dimensional multi-modal datasets and analyses, preferably with clinical, biomarker, real-world data and/or PK/PD data sets

+ Self-directed, independent, and highly motivated researcher who excels in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team environment

+ Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to engage and effectively communicate within a cross-disciplinary team is highly valued

+ Experience with high performance computing environments and cloud computing platforms is a plus

+ Primary authorship on relevant publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals
