In this key leadership role, the Manager of Pharmacy Operations will provide oversight of the pharmacy operation and manage pharmacy practice for the pharmacy assigned. This leader will participate in the development and implementation of policies that promote unparalleled medication quality and safety. This person will be responsible for ensuring the pharmacy's compliance with regulations of licensing authorities and accreditation agencies.

The Manager of Pharmacy Operations will oversee all staff engaged in the practice of pharmacy. The Manager Pharmacy Operations is ultimately accountable to ensure compliance with all pharmacy practice-related policies and procedures as well as government regulation and established pharmacy practice standards.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Manages record keeping for the pharmacy that is compliant with all regulation, standards, and policy
  • Responsible for implementation of medication safety related initiatives, including quality improvement initiatives
  • Contributes to the establishment of a learning environment
  • Supports product development to advance the professional practice of pharmacy at Avella
  • Collaborates with OptumRx government affairs and legal departments on all pharmacy related federal and state hearings, rules, regulations, legislation, licensing and laws
  • Confirms professional staff is properly licensed and prepared to provide quality pharmacy care
  • Creates and maintains credible relationships at varying levels of the organization
  • Responsible for oversight of the practice of pharmacy in the pharmacy assigned
  • Attends board of pharmacy meetings regularly to maintain a working relationship with the home-state board and maintain awareness of board activity
  • Responsible for clinical oversight of pharmacy clinicians to ensure qualified clinicians are accountable to the organization for decisions affecting consumer
  • Oversees staff duties related to the fulfillment of prescription orders; i.e. interpreting physicians' prescriptions, creating order, accessing, inputting and retrieving prescription info from computer system, verifying order reimbursement, dispensing unit doses, specialty pharmaceuticals and injectable drugs, compound medications
  • Responsible for direct reports and developing a high performing team through the use of effective coaching and performance management


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Must maintain an active pharmacist license in the home state of the pharmacy and be eligible to hold the designation of pharmacist in charge under the laws, rules, or regulations of the state
  • For non-resident states in which the assigned pharmacy is licensed or registered the PIC must be eligible to hold the designation of pharmacist in charge when a non-resident state requires a PIC be named
  • Must maintain an active pharmacist license for every non-resident state permit held by the pharmacy when the non-resident state requires such pharmacist licensing
  • Must not be barred from the practice of pharmacy in any state or federal program
  • Must not be barred from holding the designation of pharmacist in charge for any state
  • Effective analytical and critical thinking skills needed to evaluate complex opportunities and recommend viable solutions consistent with the goals, objectives, and policies of Optum Specialty.
  • Acutely aware of external developments in the industry
  • Demonstrates sound judgment and decision-making skills
  • Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws pertaining to the practice of pharmacy
  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written skills and the ability to speak to large groups
