Since 1969, Lakeside has been the premier provider of specialized behavioral health and addictive disease services in the Memphis and Mid-South region. The 345-bed facility is one of the largest free-standing psychiatric hospital in the United States.  We are located on a serene 37-acre campus in northeast Shelby County, serving as the setting for the treatment for children, adolescents, young adults, adults and seniors. Lakeside’s comprehensive programs treat disorders such as bipolar disorder, psychological trauma, depression and anxiety, mental illnesses and addictive disease disorders such as alcoholism, drug addiction and substance abuse.

Key Responsibilities include:

Codes and abstracts hospital medical records for maintenance of disease indices, compliance with federal, state and other regulatory agencies, and reimbursement. Uses various coding manuals such as ICD-10CM and DSM-V. Maintains monthly and annual statistical reports/files. Abstracts information from the medical record into AS-400 computer system. This individual is responsible for processing all internal and external reports needing filing in the records, retrieval of permanent records, file new records and re-file continuing records, process transcribed reports, process release of information requests utilizing JCAHO, HIPAA, Title XXII and Federal regulatory bodies. Safeguards and preserves the confidentiality of patient identifiable information in accordance with hospital and department policy. Promotes a positive working environment and guest relations, assumes and/or performs additional duties as requested by the director.

Job Requirements

Position Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to demonstrate competency in the criteria listed in this job description. The specifications listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability to meet the minimum requirement for this position.

Education: Must have a high school diploma or the equivalent; (2) years of college preferred.

Experience: Prefer one year in Health Information Management Department, Psychiatric setting preferred. Has knowledge of medical terminology, skilled in the use of ICD-10 and DSM-V.

Licensure/Certification: Possess a CCA, CCS or RHIT administered by AHIMA and/or CPC, CPC-H or CPC-P administered by AAPC; or eligible to take one of the examinations.

Knowledge: Has knowledge of medical, psychiatric and Health Information / Medical Records terminology, procedures and functions:

  • Basic knowledge of medical record content and sequence

  • Using both alphabetical and numerical filing systems

    Must be fluent in English with excellent communication skills, has basic clerical training, which includes computer operation skills, and fundamental knowledge of office procedures, confidentiality and release of information laws, secretarial skills to include typing at 40 words per minute and various computer and word processing programs.
