A Medical Writer in the Health Economics and Outcomes Research Division of Optum will lead author teams to develop publication deliverables, primarily manuscripts, posters, podium presentations and abstracts. The MW is also responsible for developing the publication timeline and strategy and identifying and synthesizing relevant primary source literature for inclusion in publications. Additional writing tasks may occasionally include literature summaries, white papers and report writing.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Prepare publication deliverables (90%) may include (but are not limited to)
    • Responsible for drafting manuscripts (approximately 70%), abstracts/posters (approximately 20%) and miscellaneous written materials (approximately 10%)
    • Serve as the lead writer on publication projects. Lead author team meetings, help define objective(s) and scope, identify target journals/scientific conferences , provide perspective on significance of results, identify and incorporate relevant literature, critically revise in response to feedback from reviewers and internal stakeholders
    • Manage publication projects: develop timelines for publication development, adhere to standard operating procedures for publication development, adhere to contractual timelines and deliverables, monitor budget to actuals, work within budgeted project hours and identify need for additional funding as appropriate
    • Manage internal and external client relationships, aligning expectations with timelines and deliverables
  • Infrastructure projects (10%) may include (but are not limited to)
    • Work as a team to develop publication-related standard operating procedures, checklists, and training materials
    • Provide critical review of draft materials prepared by other writers/researchers as needed
    • Provide consultation on target journals to other MW writers as needed

Required Qualifications:

  • A master's or doctoral"degree in a life sciences discipline
  • A minimum of 2 years'"experience as a medical writer or author, preferably in a CRO or pharmaceutical"setting, with a successful track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals
  • Proven experience in"searching and synthesizing medical literature relevant to publication projects,"ability to interpret statistical analyses and grasp strengths and limitation of"study design
  • Strong written and oral"communication skills: ability to communicate effectively with clinicians,"researchers, and non-technical personnel
  • Ability to lead and manage"publication projects
  • Familiarity with AMA style
  • Proactive identification and"resolution of problems with minimal supervision
  • Advanced skills in Microsoft"Office product software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Must be able to perform most"tasks with minimal supervision
  • Must be detail oriented
