SUMMARY  

 

The Mental Health Technician is responsible for planning and implementing activity services for assigned program, which involves implementing treatment goals as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and providing continuous patient care, observation, interaction, and role modeling to patients under the direction of an RN.

 

 

 

 ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

 

ASSESSMENT

 

 

1.    Demonstrate responsibility for observation and application of sound judgment in patients’ physical and mental condition/needs.

 

 

2.     Observe and document changes in patients’ appearance, behavior, and ability to work towards treatment plan goals.

 

 

3.     Communicate changes in patient’s condition to Charge Nurse.

 

 

4.     Assist with psychosocial/leisure and recreational skills development.

 

 

5.    Take and record vital signs accurately.

 

 

INTERVENTIONS

 

 

 

1.    Ensure timely documentation of interventions and ensure interventions are based on the patient’s plan of care.

 

 

 

2.    Apply appropriate crisis interventions techniques, as required

 

 

 

3.    Assist patients in achieving their optimum level of independent functioning

 

 

 

4.    Document services rendered in accordance with established criteria.

 

 

5.     Ensure intervention is based on the patient’s plan of care.

 

 

5.     Ability to recognize patient distress and intervene early using the patient’s crisis safety plan.

 

 

MILIEU

 

 

 

1.    Provide structure and maintains a therapeutic environment in collaboration with the patient and other health care providers.

 

 

 

2.    Monitor patients and their therapeutic environment for changes in acuity and intervenes if needed in a timely fashion..

 

 

 

3.    Assure patients are adequately oriented to the unit.

 

 

 

4.    Monitor unit activities and encourages patient participation.

 

 

5    Act as a role model to promote good health and hygiene skills.

 

 

6.   Report potential crisis situations to the Charge Nurse.

 

 

7.    Consistently utilize universal precautions and environmental safety guidelines.

 

 

8    Assist with maintaining a safe environment by use of environmental room checks.

 

 

9    Assist in structured didactic groups with patients and families under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.

 

 

PERFORMANCE ACCOUNTABILITY

 

 

 

1.    Demonstrate excellent guest relations in communication and cooperation, assisting patients, licensed practitioners, co-workers, and visitors in a prompt and courteous manner

 

 

 

2.    Act as a patient advocate and assure patient’s rights are upheld.

 

 

 

3.    Report therapeutic services charges daily, substantiating any changes in the treatment notes.

 

 

 

4.    Provide direction, education, and in-service to other unit personnel regarding activity therapy.

 

 

 

5.    Participate in performance improvement activities (i.e., in-services, conferences or seminars).

 

 

 

6.    Utilize time constructively and in an organized manner to accomplish assigned responsibilities, delegates duties to other personnel as appropriate, and demonstrates good judgment when making decisions.

 

 

 

7.    Adhere to facility, department and Corporate Personnel Policies and Procedures.

 

 

8.     Attend all mandatory facility in-services and staff development activities as scheduled

 

 

Job Requirements

::

QUALIFICATIONS 

Licensure: Must maintain a valid driver's license in the applicable state.

Additional Requirements:  Successful completion of CPR Certification and HWC within 30 days of employment.  May be required to work overtime and flexible hours.

 

 

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Education:  Associate’s degree or High School diploma plus 2 years direct patient care experience in a psychiatric facility required.

Experience: Two (2) years of related experience, with a knowledge of psychiatric patient care techniques and understanding of mental illness, preferred.
