Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION:   Under the direction of the Nursing Executive, the Nurse Manager is responsible for the clinical leadership and coordination of all nursing personnel.  This position ensures the delivery of quality nursing care by managing and supervising the staff providing direct care.  Serves actively and constructively as member of the multi-disciplinary treatment team in support of the organization and program treatment philosophy; to ensure the safety and well-being of patients.




  1. Provides leadership through assessment, planning, implementing and evaluation of direct patient care services provided in each clinical area

  2. Assists and HR Department with hiring and selection processes through screening, interviewing and making recommendation for hire.Anticipates staffing trends and needs and proactively offers staffing solutions.

  3. Ensures productive and efficient staffing of units based on a thorough understanding of the correlation between patient census and FTE standards; coordinates with Scheduler and assumes staffing function as needed.

  4. Monitors patient progress in compliance with treatment plan, making recommendations in accordance with patient care needs; ensure medical/nursing needs are addressed in the treatment plan.

  5. Provides clinical supervision and assists staff in planning patient care

  6. Provides feedback to staff on performance, reinforcing desired behaviors and teambuilding efforts and intervening promptly in deficiencies to reduce turnover rate and formal performance measures.

  7. Instructs and guides mental health specialists, and nurses in patient care responsibilities and assignments

  8. Demonstrates clinical expertise and sets a strong therapeutic tone for patient interventions; works diligently to reduce the occurrences of physical restraint and seclusion of patients.

  9. Reviews safety, risk management, infection control and incident reports to identify and discuss trends with nursing staff.

  10. Reviews and analyzes patient chart data for nursing improvement opportunities in the areas of programming and core delivery

  11. Working with , develops and implements ongoing staffing development plans; coordinates training resources to meet those needs

  12. Performs personnel management activities including direct staff supervision, orientation/training/development, performance management and employee relations functions; adheres to HR policies/procedures, and applicable employment laws, standards and regulations

  13. Completes Kronos data entry for direct care staff ensuringa timely and accurate account of hours worked each week/pay period

  14. Completes performance evaluations for staff in a timely manner, including initial and 90-day competencies, and annual performance evaluations

  15. May serve as the acting in the absence of the and work on the unit in critical staffing situations

  16. Perform other duties that may be assigned.


Job Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:  Possesses current, valid RN license of practice in Alaska. Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing or baccalaureate program (preferred.)  Experience in planning and implementing therapeutic programming and with clinical infection control practices required.




  1. Possess a working knowledge of aseptic techniques, prevention and control of communicable diseases, safe work practices and basics management skills.
  2. Remain current with federal, state, and local healthcare standards, policies and procedures for workplace health and safety.
  3. Ability to maintain working relationships with medical staff.
  4. Possess sound clinical judgment and critical thinking skills.
  5. Possess good record-keeping and organizational skills.
  6. Able to perform concentrated and/or complex mental activity with frequent involvement in complex and/or highly technical situations;
  7. Ability to perform assignments with minimal supervision; be self-directed and willing to assume decision making responsibilities;
  8. Ability to work successfully under highly stressful conditions;
  9. Ability to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles;
  10. Capability of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis;
  11. Effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills – both written and verbal.
  12. Must have math skills to perform calculation of drug dosages.
  13. Must possess a valid Alaska Drivers License in order to transport patients and/or staff, or drive hospital vehicles.
  14. Must have a working knowledge of computers.




  • Must be willing and able to execute the patient de-escalation methods, both verbal and physical.
  • Must be able to complete new hire requirements such as State of Alaska Background Check and Drug Testing.
  • Must be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training.
  • Must be certified in CPR and Handle with Care within the first month of training and annually thereafter.
  • Must complete all mandatory in-services annually.
  • Must attend and/or participate in monthly direct care staff and nurse meetings
  • Must be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire; PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray annually thereafter.



GENERAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT:  Working conditions for all employees are as follows, but not limited to a psychiatric hospital setting; some risk involved in the event of aggressive patient(s); work load may include day, evening, night, weekend and/or holiday shifts.  Employees occasionally exposed to blood borne pathogens, and loud noise levels. 


Mental demands described herein are representative of those which must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, but are not limited to the ability to remain calm in a stressful environment; and the emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.



PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:  Requirements include, but are not limited to the ability to communicate effectively with employees; the ability to effectively utilize communication equipment; the physical agility to manage cleaning equipment; the ability to read, write.


  • Frequently utilize physical ability for standing or sitting for long periods of time.
  • Regularly utilize physical ability for speaking, hearing, and seeing with correction for close and distance vision, color discrimination, peripheral vision, depth perception and focusing ability.  Speaking and hearing may be necessary for conversing with and assessing employees.
  • Able to ascend/descend stairs and ramps; body agility is emphasized.
  • Able to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist; bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s)
  • Able to extend hands and arms in any direction
  • Able to use upper and lower extremities to exert force in a pulling or pushing motion. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Able to raise objects from a lower to higher position or from side-to-side.
  • The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.
  • The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions
  • Must be able to concentrate amidst distractions; must be able to perform work of a repetitive nature; must respond calmly to potentially volatile clients
  • Mental demands include but are not limited to emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.



EQUIPMENT/MATERIALS USED:         Telephone, computer, copier, fax machine, video player small hand tools and writing instruments.
