ABOUT THE ROLE: The Online/Social Media Associate plays an integral role in helping craft and execute an effective advocacy strategy for our 400,000 members and supporters. The position guides and grows Public Citizen's online advocacy and education programs. It requires excellent writing and communication skills, a creative approach, and a proven track record in quick and nimble responses to current news and opportunities.

In addition to the work around online advocacy, this position will help execute Public Citizen's social media strategy and assist in growing all PC's social media channels.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Oversee all email communications to our list of 500,000 supporters, ensuring we hit our list-growth goals and promoting excellence in our digital activism program.
  • Assist in designing online strategies to grow grassroots lists, motivate action and donations, and grow online activists into field activist engagement.
  • Work with members of the online team to identify creative, strategic and timely ways of supporting their campaigns and tying advocacy emails to news events
  • Develop and meet targets for online advocacy program
  • Edit and check the targeting of all advocacy emails before they go out
  • Monitor, evaluate and report on the performance of our emails and ensure good list health and hygiene
  • Lead planning meetings for our online team and manage the e-advocacy and fundraising calendar
  • Run point on arranging and implementing list-building opportunities such as joint petitions and email swaps with other organizations
  • Manage our activism and fundraising CRM (Salsa), as well as the vendor relationship with the CRM provider (Salsa Labs)
  • In collaboration with program staff and Public Citizen's digital media strategist, help design multifaceted social media programs for Public Citizen campaigns, combining multiple platforms and tactics to achieve public education, communications, advocacy and brand-building goals
  • Respond to breaking news by creating memes, graphics, tweets, Facebook posts and other content to amplify the various campaigns online
  • Keep up to date with e-advocacy and social media best practices
  • Keep abreast of current events, politics and policymaking as they relate to Public Citizen's advocacy and fundraising campaigns.
  • Other duties as assigned

You could be great for this job if you:

  • Have at least3-5 years of online advocacy or social media experience or a comparable mix of relevant experience
  • Are creative and able to envision, plan and implement long-term strategies and campaigns.
  • Are able to work well with a wide range of people in a team-based environment and are adaptable to different work processes, styles and sometimes fluid work agendas
  • Have strong organizational skills and the ability to handle many competing priorities without letting key tasks slip through the cracks
  • Possess a strong knowledge of social media platforms and digital activism toolsets (such as SALSA or Action Network)
  • Write in a clear and compelling way to make complex policy proposals accessible and compelling to a variety of audiences
  • Bring solid skills in making graphics, memes and images and can quickly learn how to use new software and technology.
  • Have a good understanding of the tools required to effectively implement a robust online activism program, including through Facebook and Google ads creation, segmenting and tracking.
  • Have experience with using analytics to improve performance required.
  • Have a passion for supporting the public interest and share our concerns about corporate power in government

Although not required, a strong candidate may have some of the following:

  • Knowledge of micro-targeting, HTML, web standards (including accessibility standards) and Google Analytics
  • Experience training others on social media platforms and best practices
  • Familiarity with video and web editing.
