Job Description

Performs venipunctures and other patient specimen collections Has thorough knowledge of testing and collection requirements, Requires moderate supervision, General Supervisor must be onsite.                                                                                                                                                                                           

 Essential Job Duties:

Consistently draws blood competently and expediently with as little patient discomfort as possible.              

Displays courteous, professional manner towards patients, co-workers, nursing and medical staff.

Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.      

Labels and records all test tubes at bedside, logs procedures, files paperwork.   

Is knowledgeable about which color top tube to use and the volume of blood needed - knows test requirements.     

Follows Standard Precautions at all times.   

Disposes all sharps in a rigid sharps container.           

Cleans and supplies venipuncture trays. Maintains work areas. Notifies Lab leadership for ordering.              

Requires minimal supervision in performance of job duties.    

Completes duties in a time efficient manner, knows how to prioritize STAT orders, ASAP orders, scheduled orders and outpatients.

Seeks guidance and direction as necessary. 

Demonstrates the value of team concept on a consistent basis.            

Performs clerical work when possible.          

Follows policies and procedures for the Clinical Laboratory and the hospital.     

Handling paperwork that might be exposed to blood, body fluids or tissues.      

Processing, centrifuging, uncapping specimens          

Contact with blood, urine, stool, body fluids, tissues and other specimen types.

Disposal of blood, body fluid or tissue specimens and spill clean-up materials.   

Cleaning/disinfecting equipment.  

Troubleshooting/maintaining office type instruments.            

Handling of specimen tubes.           

Cleaning up spills of blood or body fluids.    

Loading samples onto instruments.

Disposal of Sharps and biohazard wastes.    

Unpacking supplies reagents and media and storing properly and according to policies and procedures.              

Collection of specimens by venipuncture, fingerstick or heelstick.         

Contact with trauma patients with extensive wounds or blood loss.     

Handling of specimen procurement equipment.        

 

Department Specific Requirements

Familiar with vendors and hospital supplies/equipment and materials management operations for VHS              

Responsible for assisting in the supply expense management and control.         

Knowledge of information systems application for laboratory management. Confers with Laboratory Leadership in assisting LIS with interface and data storage requirements that meet regulatory compliance         

General knowledge and overview of Laboratory Management and Leadership how it corresponds to daily hospital operations. 

Maintains safe and clean working environment and ensures lab staff’s is knowledgeable and compliant with facilities safety policies, disaster planning, and regulatory standards           

 

Classification Specific Requirements             

Competency in technology and computers as necessary for job responsibilities.

Makes suggestions/recommendations for improved operations to the department, facility.          

Effectively communicates both orally and in writing.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 

Job Requirements

Job Requirements:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent.  Acceptable phlebotomy training program.                                                                                                                                     

Technical Skills: Certification by ASCP, NCA, AMT OR educational training with State of Nevada Board approved program and demonstration of the ability to perform venipuncture and other specimen collections.                                                                                                                                                 

License/Certification: Phlebotomy certification required upon hire (Laboratory Assistant or Point of Care analyst license may be substituted for certification).  Laboratory Assistant or Point of Care Analyst licensure with the State of  Nevada within 6 months of hire.   

                                                                                                                                      

Other: Basic computer knowledge required
