Postdoc Translational Modeling and Simulation

The Pfizer BioMedicine Design group based in Cambridge, MA is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral researcher to undertake a project developing a quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) model for predicting human efficacious dose of immuno-oncology (I-O) therapeutics. While immune therapy has changed the landscape of cancer treatments, patients' response to immune therapies vary. Capability to predict human efficacious doses at the preclinical research stage not only assists resource allocation but also informs clinical trial design. However, challenges remain in the preclinical to clinical translation, especially for I-O therapeutics. Quantitative systems pharmacology modeling is a mathematical approach to distill the interplay between a drug of interest, the immune system and the cancer cells. The postdoctoral candidate will work in the translational modeling and simulation group, and collaborate with biologists, clinical pharmacologists, pharmacometrians and clinicians to develop a QSP model for human efficacious dose prediction and to estimate the associated uncertainty via virtual patient simulations. The successful candidate will have exposure to preclinical and clinical research in the development of both large and small molecules. The desired outcome of the project is to inform human efficacious dose predictions at the stage of preclinical research for I-O therapeutics within Pfizer and beyond.

The appointment is initially two years, with an option for two annual extensions, based on research needs and progress, for a total maximum term of four years.


+ Identify literature and internal data to inform model development, optimization and validation

+ Employ modeling and simulation techniques to develop and subsequently validate a translational QSP model to predict human efficacious doses and the associated uncertainties of I-O drugs

+ Effectively communicate research to scientists with diverse backgrounds

+ Authorize scientific publications as the primary author and present at internal and external scientific meetings


+ Recent Ph.D (0 - 3 years) in Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Pharmaceutical Sciences or related discipline with strong numerical components focusing on mathematical modeling and simulation

+ Previous experience in building QSP or ordinary differential equation-based models of biological or physiological systems

+ Computational fluency with modeling and simulation software (MATLAB, R, C/C++ preferred)

+ Primary authorship on relevant publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals

+ Self-directed, independent and motivated scientist who excels in a collaborative and multidisciplinary team environment

+ Must be willing to relocate to Cambridge, MA, USA

+ Excellent communication and writing skills

+ Creative and innovative early career scientist with a passion for learning new areas of biology and building on a solid foundation of quantitative and computational skills
