**Position Purpose** Quantitative Systems Pharmacology (QSP) is a discipline that uses mechanistic mathematical models and disease platforms to enhance the robustness and quality of decision-making from exploratory research through clinical development. The Quantitative Systems Pharmacology RU Lead is accountable for QSP modeling and simulation activities within one or more therapeutic areas and may supervise a small group of modelers. This individual works closely with biology, clinical, clinical pharmacology/pharmacometrics, and translational modeling & simulation colleagues in a highly stimulating, collaborative, and multi-disciplinary environment to develop a quantitative and mechanistic link between target modulation and disease outcome to inform drug discovery and development decisions.



**Organizational Relationships:**



+ Reports to ECD Clinical Pharmacology QSP Group Head

+ Serves as a member of the ECD Clinical Pharmacology QSP Leadership Team

+ Establishes and maintains matrixed relationships with Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacometrics Group Heads, Translational Modeling & Simulation Leads (Med & Biomed Design), Clinical Research Head, Research Program Leads, Biology Leads, Clinical Leads, Precision Medicine Leads (imaging, digital medicine and other biomarkers), and CSOs.



**Primary Duties:**



+ Accountable for QSP modeling and simulation activities to support the Oncology Research Unit , serving as primary point-of-contact and therapeutic area subject matter expert for QSP activities that transcend individual projects

+ Supervises work and provides training and mentorship to Quantitative Systems Pharmacologists supporting the RU

+ As a member of multi-disciplinary project teams, develops and utilizes QSP models to impact the robustness and quality of decisions along the drug discovery and development pipeline, including target selection and prioritization, and preclinical and clinical study design.

+ Establishes and maintains strong partnerships at the project and therapeutic area levels within the Research Unit, including Biology, Clinical, and Research Project Leads, as well as counterparts in Translational Modeling & Simulation (Medicine and Biomedicine Design), Clinical Pharmacology, and Pharmacometrics

+ Provides expert support to project teams for mechanistic, systems-level interpretation and analyses of preclinical and clinical data

+ Keeps up to date with literature concerning QSP approaches to targets and indications within the RU with particular attention to disease modeling (PK/PD, systems, and pharmacostatistical modeling)

+ Contributes to cross-Pfizer modeling and simulation strategies and initiatives, as needed

+ Influences environment outside of Pfizer through external publications and presentations



**BASIC QUALIFICATIONS**



+ Ph.D., Pharm. D., or equivalent training or experience in pharmacometrics, pharmacokinetics, clinical pharmacology, engineering, mathematics, or physics with strong focus on mechanistic mathematical modeling and simulation of biological systems or related disciplines.

+ 10+ years of experience with QSP, clinical, and translational pharmacology aspects of drug discovery and development

+ Demonstrates thorough understanding of: 1) quantitative systems-level approaches to mechanistic biology and drug discovery and development, with application to oncology 2) mechanistic PKPD modeling; 3) hands-on experience is required

+ Demonstrates ability to effectively present data and influence decisions to various audiences in both verbal and written form.

+ Demonstrates understanding of the complexities and recent developments in quantitative systems pharmacology and the implications for drug discovery and clinical development.

+ **Candidate demonstrates a breadth of diverse leadership experiences and capabilities including: the ability to influence and collaborate with peers, develop and coach others, oversee and guide the work of other colleagues to achieve meaningful outcomes and create business impact.**



**PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS**



+ Hands-on experience in developing and applying QSP approaches to drug discovery and development programs, with demonstrated impact on program decisions

+ Supervisory or graduate/postdoctoral mentorship experience

+ Deep understanding of theory, principles, and statistical aspects of mathematical modeling and simulation, including numerical methods, parameter estimation/optimization, ordinary differential equations (ODEs), and how these can be applied in the development of complex models of biological pathways and systems

+ Computational fluency with one or more modeling and simulation packages or high-level programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, R, Julia, Python, SimBiology, C/C++)

+ Creative and innovative scientist who is passionate about developing a quantitative understanding of disease and disease mechanisms and who has experience working closely with biologists, clinical and nonclinical modelers, and clinical colleagues

+ Self-directed, independent, and highly-motivated researcher who excels in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team environment

+ Excellent oral and written communication skills

+ Primary authorship on relevant publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals
