The Infectious Disease Research Institute (IDRI) is a Seattle-based non-profit research organization committed to developing products to prevent, detect and treat infectious diseases. IDRI translates basic research to develop vaccines, diagnostics and drugs for applications in global health. We focus on antigen discovery and development, adjuvant formulation and delivery, drug discovery and development, and biomarker discovery for diagnostics. IDRI’s leadership in the global health community extends to international alliances and partnerships with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, universities, research institutes, governments, and public health organizations.

The preclinical vaccine development group is looking for a research assistant to work on the development and characterization of an RNA-based gene-expression platform. You will have the opportunity to work closely with molecular biologists, virologists, immunologists, and material scientists to optimize formulation and delivery of RNA with specific applications in areas of vaccine and therapeutic development. Immediate work will focus on the development of universal influenza vaccine candidates as well as optimization of gene-encoded antibody delivery for rapid protection against emerging infectious diseases. 

A strong background in molecular biology is preferred. Major techniques include cloning, cell culture, and animal work.

Responsibilities:

  • PCR and molecular cloning; transformation of e. coli
  • Gel electrophoresis
  • DNA purification and preparation for RNA transcriptions
  • Sequencing and analysis
  • RNA transcription and capping
  • Maintenance of multiple cell-lines
  • Transfection and assays for reporter-gene expression
  • Multi-color flow cytometry
  • Western blots
  • Animal work including injections via multiple routes and blood collection
  • Perform intracellular cytokine staining, ELISPOTS, ELISA and other immunological assays
  • Monitors laboratory supply inventories and works with purchasing to ensure available stock for group or area
  • Presents research at group meetings
  • Communicates with research management on a regular basis
  • Utilize mathematical and scientific techniques to compile and analyze data
  • Maintain the highest standards of laboratory practice in line with IDRI policy.
  • Contribute freely to the team research environment in a manner conducive to the success of the research project as a whole

Requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • A BS/BA, or equivalent in a biological discipline
  • 0-3 years full-time laboratory experience with basic molecular cloning, PCR, and cell culture
  • Interest in infectious diseases
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Computer literacy, proficiency in MS Office programs

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advanced molecular cloning, PCR, and cell culture
  • Animal experience
  • Basic biochemistry experience (western blots)

Although these qualifications are desired, we are particularly interested in training the next generation of scientists. Those who are seeking laboratory experience as a stepping stone to becoming a scientist and were unable to do so doing undergraduate school are encouraged to apply.
