Position Purpose

Autonomously provides grant management to faculty members across multiple departments including proposal development, financial management of awarded projects, and strategic planning to support research objectives. Works in partnership with the Office of Sponsored Projects and the Dean of Faculty Fiscal Office. The Research Grant Manager III is co-responsible with the PI on each project for compliance with Federal and non-Federal regulations, contract terms, and College policy.

Key Accountabilities

Pre Award Administration 40%

  • Works in partnership with faculty and senior research staff in preparing proposal submissions to external funding sources including developing project budgets while considering sponsor and College policies.
  • Proactively address issues of commitment and budgetary overlap to reduce compliance risk.
  • Facilitates College's routing and approval process. Resolves issues relating to proposal submission that occur during the course of the College approval process and agency review.

Post award Administration 20%

  • Manages the financial aspects of sponsored projects. Advises faculty on issues of spending and budgeting to ensure compliance and to mitigate audit risk. Allows the PI to concentrate on research in order to accomplish the obligated scope of work per the award agreements with the sponsors, as well as academic year commitments.
  • Solely responsible for determining allowability, allocability and reasonableness of expenditures on grants.
  • Reconciles expenses and revenues of the grant against expected amounts and ensures that all errors are corrected on a timely basis. Generates reports for faculty on expenditures and encumbrances.
  • Provides faculty with spending projections of their total research support and strategically plan for the best use of research funding.
  • Assists faculty in preparation of necessary reports to meet internal and external requirements.

Personnel Administration 30%

  • Supervises and mentors a half-time Grants Management Assistant; delegating work, training in reconciling and research grant compliance. Mentors and trains Research Grant Managers I & II.
  • Responsible for the personnel/payroll process for all appointments to research accounts including research faculty and associates, technicians, faculty offsets and summer supplements.
  • Oversees faculty effort process to assure compliance with research effort commitments and academic obligations. Advises faculty on issues concerning effort. Formulates and implements plans to accurately capture faculty effort.
  • Collaborates with the Dean's Office and department administration to resolve personnel related issues and non-routine activities such as layoffs, disabilities, etc.

General 10%

  • Serves as a liaison between PIs, Dean of Faculty Office, Office of Sponsored Projects and other College offices to accomplish the College's research vision.
  • Interprets financial and business-related terms of sponsored agreements and advises faculty and research staff on adherence to College and agency policies. Assures compliance in the management of grant projects.
  • Independently makes decisions on a daily basis regarding financial and administrative aspects of sponsored projects in both the pre-award and post-award process including decisions about integration of multiple grants, "reasonable basis of allocation" and overlap of budgetary and effort commitments. Such decisions obligate the College and have a significant financial impact.
  • Functions as a resource for faculty and other administrators regarding grant policy.
  • Serves multiple departments and programs necessitating understanding of multiple sponsor and agency requirements.
