Senior Scientist, BMD Biotherapeutic Production

BioMedicine Design (BMD) at Pfizer is looking for a highly motivated Molecular and Cell Biologist to join our high-energy Biotherapeutic Expression and Purification group in Cambridge, MA. The group supports non-GMP transient protein lead production across Pfizer's diverse biotherapeutic discovery portfolio supporting Pfizer's research units and their pre-clinical therapeutic in-vitro and in-vivo needs. The candidate is expected to have a strong background in molecular and cell biology and experience with process automation, cell culture, and WAVE Bioreactor production. Experience in lab automation, liquid handling systems, and other related process driven disciplines is a plus. The candidate will be responsible for leading vector DNA production and expression of recombinant protein modalities including, but not limited to, monoclonal antibodies using state-of-the-art technologies and equipment. The candidate will contribute to the group wide deliverables and be required to work on several projects simultaneously presenting results and updates at group meetings.


+ Production of plasmid DNA to support transient recombinant protein expression and maintenance of our plasmid library

+ Oversee and utilize upstream production automation instrumentation

+ Conduct large-scale transient recombinant protein expression using the WAVE Bioreactor system up to 20L

+ Provide technical support across the therapeutic development cycle

+ Conduct testing of new process methods, technologies and products, including but not limited to new product scale-up, process optimization, and DNA production

+ Drive technology innovation. Maintain knowledge of scientific trends industry processes through readings, conferences and seminars; review literature to advance manufacturing procedures and methods

+ Work closely with multidisciplinary teams including therapeutic discovery teams, research units, bioanalytical teams, transient purification and stable cell line development groups, engineering leads, and R&D project leaders


+ A PhD with 0-3 years of relevant experience in Molecular and Cell Biology, Biochemistry, or a related discipline along with a solid understanding of recombinant protein production

+ Experience and strong background molecular and cell biology and recombinant protein expression

+ Proficiency at the bench in molecular biology techniques such as primer design, PCR, DNA and RNA extraction, DNA mutagenesis, DNA cloning, plasmid mini-prep, DNA and protein sequence analysis, cell transformation, cell culture, and other more advanced molecular biology techniques

+ Experienced at passaging and producing in suspension cell culture systems (HEK, CHO, and E coli)

+ Proficient at WAVE bioreactor production scale-up

+ Familiarity of system operating software packages including Unicorn and ChemStation

+ Demonstrated technical expertise in large-scale transient expression of recombinant proteins

+ Track record of strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills, organized, detail oriented, a bility to prioritize responsibilities, multi-task, and remain flexible with changing needs

+ Must be motivated and able to work under strict deadlines

+ Able to work effectively in cross-functional teams to solve process development problems or implement improved procedures

+ Strong organizational skills

+ Strong written and oral communication skills


+ Industry experience in plasmid DNA production and antibodies/therapeutic protein expression

+ Experience in design and implementation of new procedures for upstream protein production process improvements

+ Experience with DOE concepts and tools

+ Python and/or VB experience

+ Prior experience in therapeutic protein discovery and biochemistry research

+ Mentorship experience
