What You'll Do

The Hardware & Firmware Security team seeks an eager software/firmware engineer that is interested in learning and growing in the product security space. The ideal candidate will have both general software development skills as well as low level software skills including experience with CPU bootstrap and configuration code, and have experience working with embedded processor systems.

  • Responsibilities are focused on the development of hardware and firmware-based security technologies to improve the trustworthiness of Cisco products, and the deployment of these technologies with product teams across Cisco.
  • The software development in this role is focused on low level firmware and bootcode implemented in C or assembly, and does include higher level software development at OS or application level
  • This is multifaceted role including development activities with hardware and software peers within the Hardware & Firmware Security team, applications engineering serving the product teams deploying security technologies, assessment of system architectures and components for security capabilities and/or vulnerabilities, and education to increase the security awareness of others.
  • The successful candidate will need to be comfortable working in an environment with many concurrent activities and be able to prioritize and manage concurrent tasks.
  • Since security threats are dynamic and constantly evolving, the role will also require ongoing education to improve security knowledge and awareness, investigation of new security threats and technologies to address them, as well as evaluation of security solutions.
  • Designing, developing, documenting, testing and supporting software as well as combined hardware and firmware-based security technologies.
  • Providing mentorship and guidance for other software team members
  • Software development and test utilizing CPU evaluation platforms as well as Cisco products under development.
  • Assisting product teams deploying hardware and software security technologies.
  • Developing documentation, proof of concepts, reference code, and scripts to facilitate adoption and verification of security technologies.
  • Analyzing new software and hardware security technologies and identifying mechanisms to integrate and deploy these technologies across a wide variety of Cisco products.
  • Participating in, and contributing to, architecture, design, specification, and code reviews.

Become a member of Ciscos Hardware & Firmware Security Team! Cisco is looking for an energetic, innovative, and self-starting software/firmware engineer to design, implement, test and support features & solutions within the Foundational Security Team (FST). FST seeks to increase product security and trustworthiness across a broad range of Cisco products through development, integration and deployment of reusable software and hardware solutions.

Who You Are

  • B.S./M.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field.
  • Strong C development and software development best practice experience mandatory.
  • Python experience developing automation and test scripts.
  • Experience working with software version control systems such as Git.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, independent initiative, problem solving, software debugging and teamwork.

Desired Skills/Qualifications/System Experience:

  • 10+ years experience in software development, test, security software, diagnostic software or other low-level embedded software.
  • Strong experience with board level bring-up and debug of low level software using JTAG debuggers and CPU emulators.
  • ARM, x86, and MIPS boot loaders, BIOS, and embedded systems development experience as well as microprocessor architecture knowledge highly desired.
  • Cryptography, security protocols, and secure software development experience highly desired.
  • In depth experience with PC BIOS architecture and UEFI highly desired.
  • Experience with embedded Linux, Cisco IOS, and/or similar Cisco product OS development a plus.
  • Experience in software secure concepts of hashing, digital image signing, encryption, and PKI key management a plus.
