Your Role and Responsibilities

The Senior WAS Middleware Specialist is a Technical Services Professional responsible for the provision of services to a billable engagement agreed between IBM and the customer, as detailed in the signed contract/SoW, on the z/OS mainframe environment.

As a member of a team, they perform a technical role in support of a customers total Middleware environment although their main focus will be
specifically in & around WebSphere Application Server (WAS). On occasion they may assist in the identification of new IT services opportunities. This can involve participating in the development, packaging and distribution of a solution.

Specifically the Senior WAS Middleware Specialists focuses on the delivery of Middleware support for WAS problems, requests for service and administration of the WAS z/OS environment on customer sites. It includes ensuring that the services provided to individual customers meet the terms and conditions of contracts; achievement of SLA objectives; achievement of a high level of customer satisfaction; and also ensuring that project tasks assigned meet time and customer satisfaction objectives.

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Understands and applies basic knowledge of information technology and associated tools of their technical speciality to support attainment of team and department objectives.

  • Requires the ability to absorb professional knowledge quickly and develop skills

  • Uses concepts involving technologies and methodologies to collaborate with other technical specialists when carrying out assigned duties.

  • Effectively negotiates with technical peers, and occasionally with customers, to implement technical solutions.

  • Analyses technical problems and creates solutions involving the use of existing techniques or tools. Performs assigned tasks within schedule in accordance with established standards and guidance.

  • Must be customer-orientated while maintaining focus on the overall delivery of service.

  • Responsible for ensuring/maintaining the technical integrity of the Middleware environment in Z/OS and other platforms.
  • Take charge of or assist in WAS software maintenance level or version upgrades
  • Will have an in-depth systems programming experience, installation, cell and server built, configuration and maintenance on the z/OS platform supporting WebSphere Application Server (WAS).
  • Familiar with Z/OS operation environments and subsystems such as CICS, DB2 and IMS.

  • Work closely with Middleware Team Lead and other WAS & middleware SMEs

  • Monitors and actions all problem records assigned within contractual service level agreements & terms and conditions

  • Liaise with dependent areas for changes impacting the Middleware environment.

  • Review and maintain Middleware product Standards to ensure currency.

  • Responsible for organising communication of all changes to appropriate parties.

  • Performs systematic problem determination in Z/OS and other platforms for WAS

  • Creates & maintains Middleware/account technical procedure documentation.

  • Escalates customer satisfaction problems to Team Leader, if necessary.

  • Complies with documented key Operations Management practices and procedures specifically for Problem, Change, Call Management and Request For Service, Alert and Critical Situation Management processes.

  • Provide after-hours and on call support.

  • Be involved in shift work as required

  • Automating WAS administration tasks using scripts.

  • WebSphere Application server Ver 6.0 to 8.5 on Z/OS

  • z/OS (Mainframe) Operating System Concepts

  • UNIX System Services & Operating System Concepts

  • JCL / ISPF / WLM / REX / JES

  • TCPIP/Networking Fundamentals

  • Jython scripting

  • Unix Shell Scripting

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
  • Ideally to be WebSphere Application Server 6.0 to 8.

  • Must be Industry Certified within 12 months of commencing role for any other Middleware Product that is supported
