**Role Summary**

As a Senior Associate Scientist, you will assist in design and optimization of microbial fermentation process to support vaccine development in the Upstream Development Group within Early Bioprocess Development, VRD, Pearl River NY. Major responsibilities of the role include screening microbial strains and developing fermentation process to be scaled up to production scale. You will join a team of scientists who are dedicated to microbial fermentation process development for vaccine production.



**Role Responsibility**



+ Design and perform experiments in bench/ SIP fermenters to evaluate fermentation conditions and optimize fermentation process.

+ Screen microbial serotype candidates in high throughput fermentation system (e.g. Bioletor Pro, Ambr250, etc.)

+ Assist with operation of fermenters from 10L scale to pilot scale, including media preparation, fermenter setup, process monitoring and control, product harvesting, etc.

+ Assist in fermentation sample analysis with HPCL, bioanalyzer and other analytical instruments.

+ Analyze fermentation data and present data and strategy to scientists and management in appropriate internal and external venues (technical meetings, project team meetings, conferences) as appropriate.

+ Provide clear reports that can be shared and transferred to and from cross-functional teams.

+ Fully documents experimentation in laboratory notebooks in a timely and compliant manner.

+ Works irregular hours (weekends and outside of 9-5 format) as experiments warrant.

+ Satisfactorily complete all Good Laboratory Practices (part of GxP) and safety training in compliance with departmental requirements and follow appropriate safety practices in the workplace.

+ Assist in the tech transfer of manufacturing processes to pilot, clinical, and commercial facilities.



**Qualifications**



+ BS. degree in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering , Biology, Microbiology or related discipline with 2-5 years experience.

+ Familiar with the design and execution of microbial fermentation.

+ Familiar with operation of high throughput bioreactor and benchtop/SIP fermenters.

+ Experience on handling BSL2 biological materials is desired.

+ Ability to work on complex experiments and multiple experiments with limited instruction and supervision.

+ Collaborates in a team environment.

+ Excellent oral and written communication skills with experience in report writing.

+ Proficient with Microsoft Office suite and other relevant scientific software.

+ Proficient with Big Data analysis using Python/R or other commercial software is a plus.



**PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS**



+ Ability to lift 50LBS item.



**NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS**



+ Occasionally work off-hours if needed due to the nature of experiment.
