We are seeking data scientists to drive new insights and lead research efforts to develop innovative assets for the healthcare delivery system. You will work closely with our expert domain scientists and business leaders to identify appropriate research questions and translate them into actionable analyses and algorithms. You will apply advanced statistical and machine learning methodologies in support of novel products for the healthcare system. The candidate will leverage advanced mathematical modeling and computational methods to prototype new data driven patient and provider tools and partner with the R&D venture, research, and clinical groups to capitalize on promising strategies.

We are seeking data scientists with a wide range of deep methodological and domain expertise however we have significant interest in individuals with backgrounds in bioinformatics, image classification, natural language processing, control theory, network theory, or signal processing.

Primary Responsibilities:

    ""
  • Develop mathematical and computational algorithms using data from traditional healthcare sources (e.g., claims, EMR, etc.) and new sensing sources (including wearables, smartphone data, web-traffic data, and beyond) to detect, prevent and intercept disease
  • ""
  • Propose and conduct statistical analysis to inform new research directions and business opportunities
  • ""
  • Provide data science subject matter expertise in collaboration with the clinical team when designing, conducting, and interpreting research study findings
  • ""
  • Build and maintain a network of academic partners to collaborate on external publications and improve UnitedHealth Group's thinking and external influence
  • ""
  • Lead the implementation of research investigations and construction of data products employing statistical and/or machine learning approaches
  • ""
  • Translate research questions or product requirements into actionable work
  • ""
  • Document research findings thoroughly and maintain well organized code on github
  • ""
  • Collaborate within cross-disciplinary research teams including business-facing leaders and expert domain scientists
  • ""
  • Provide recommendations and guidance to project leads based on insights gleaned from data
  • ""
  • Communicate effectively and clearly to a range of audiences, from domain scientists to business professionals
  • ""
  • Work effectively as both an individual analytic contributor while also mentoring and leading less experienced data scientists
  • ""
  • Effectively manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously

Required Qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field
  • ""
  • 5+ years of experience creating data driven products
  • ""
  • Experience applying a broad range of statistical, mathematical, or computational approaches using data to solve problems
  • ""
  • Proficiency in model-building language such as R and Python
  • ""
  • Working knowledge of relational databases and database structures and proficiency in SQL
  • ""
  • Solidleadership skills and demonstrated ability to organize project support teams in order to achieve project goals and outcomes
  • ""
  • You will be asked to perform this role in an office setting or other company location
  • ""

  • High focus in a collaboration mindset related to project work and support of projects in order to achieve the greater goals of UHG OptumLabs
