Position Summary:
Hands-on leader of the tax department, reporting directly to CFO, with proven technical tax accounting and planning expertise. Technical abilities along with managerial skills and business acumen to be effectively applied collaboratively with the company's leadership and management teams. Will be responsible for all federal and state income tax planning, tax accounting, and tax compliance for the organization. This position is responsible for the formulation of internal processes and execution of strategies across the organization. Ensure that career development plans are formulated and in place for internal staff. Responsible for the company's optimal utilization of internal and external tax resources.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare and review income tax provision and all required disclosures required for annual and quarterly audited financial statements.
- Manage audit of the provision with the external auditors. Work through problems encountered and effectively create and implement solutions as needed.
- Develop strategy and engage in tax planning to identify and achieve tax savings. Advise senior management on tax considerations of strategic initiatives.
- Collaborate with other departments across the company including Accounting, Finance, and Marketing, to optimize tax implications of commercial transactions.
- Collaborate with other departments across the company such as accounting, mergers and acquisitions, marketing, legal, and human resources to understand changes within the company that could have implications to tax return and provision.
- Manage completion and technical review of all federal and state income and franchise tax returns, including any audits of such returns.
- Monitor changes in federal and state tax laws and regulations and advise senior management as to the impact of potential tax legislation. Incorporate changes in laws into tax provision calculations.
- Oversee forecasting of federal and state taxable income and state apportionment by legal entity by state as needed for estimated tax payments, or support for valuation allowance calculations.
- Manage tax consulting services provided by external advisors.
- Will oversee the day-to-day activities of tax employees. Responsible for staff development and setting performance goals for the department. Exercises authority concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, and terminations.
- Oversee responsibility for Sarbanes Oxley compliance for the tax department. This includes maintaining a proper control environment to prevent and detect errors, and maintaining the narrative, controls, and evidence of the controls.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
Minimum Education: Bachelors in Accounting or Finance; or Masters degree in Accounting and/or Doctorate in Juris Prudence (JD)
Minimum Experience: 12+ years of tax experience with Bachelors or 10+ years of tax experience with Masters or JD. Experience with tax provision/valuation allowances/cash tax planning required. Experience must include 3+ years of supervisory experience.
Professional Certifications/Training Required: CPA and/or JD
Oil & Gas Exp Required: Plus
Skills: Online tax research tools, tax compliance and general ledger software products, read and interpret tax laws. Very proficient in excel.
