Your Role and Responsibilities
We are looking for an ambitious technical research manager/lead to join the IBM Research in the UK where we are focusing on the emerging areas of High Performance Computing, AI and cognitive solutions.

IBM Research represents one of the largest industrial research presences worldwide, with over 3,000 researchers undertaking research in a broad spectrum of application areas. IBM Research in the UK is based within at the Hartree Centre, on the Daresbury Scitech Park and has the aim of transforming the competitiveness of UK industry by accelerating the adoption of High Performance Computing, AI and Cognitive Technologies.

You will interact with the brightest minds in IBM and will help to bring ideas into scalable, robust outcomes. We want to bring out the best in you and expect you to do the same to us. Your proactive approach to creative problem solving will be essential to the success of our team and the company. You will need demonstrate technical leadership as well as strong client experience bringing innovation to market and creating commercialization roadmaps.

You will need a strong IT, engineering or research background in technical computing with a track record of successful delivery of projects with demonstrated technical and managerial leadership.

The variation in scientific and computational themes and projects requires someone with the necessary experience and oversight to manage not just their area of interest, but also successfully engage in other research areas, lead a team to succeed from a business and research output, and further understand personal and career development needs of their staff.

The responsibilities will be:

1) First line people management for researchers within the team including performance reviews, salary reviews, career discussions and planning for reportees etc.
2) Project management for a number of proof of concept projects for the team's external clients.
3) Management of research teams and their deliverables including Power Systems, Technical Computing as a Service projects, improving use of GPUs on Power Systems
4) Liaising with the team's Business Development team to ensure proof of concept projects are kept on track and are demonstrating value to our industrial collaborators.
5) Liaising with researchers, scientists, business development team and management in other organisations including our clients and collaborators.
6) Communication at the executive on the status of a wide range of projects.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
  • Strong technical IT background
  • At least 3 years experience of working directly with clients.
  • At least 3 years experience of working of delivering solutions to clients
  • At least 2 years experience of technical management.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.



Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
  • Must be able to work with range of people with varied backgrounds
  • Ability to rapidly understand new technical concepts.
  • Technical expertise with High Performance Computing, large scale IT systems, Cognitive Solutions, HPC or AI.
  • At least 6 months experience of people management
  • Research background in one of our key areas
