Job Description

Position Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to join us as an Upstream Development Scientist within Biologics CMC, located at West Chester, PA. The successful candidate independently designs, executes and interprets complex laboratory experiments with priorities set by supervisor to achieve project goals. The individual demonstrates an in-depth understanding of cell culture and process development and applies knowledge in support of product development and new technologies. Responsibilities will include, but will not limited to, execution of fed-batch and perfusion process development, design of experiments to drive process understanding, process characterization, and developing process control strategies from early stage development through commercial launch.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Independently design and conduct experiments for upstream process development with sound scientific rationales.
  • Sound knowledge of biochemical pathways, metabolic pathways in CHO cells
  • Hands on experience with medium and feed development for mammalian cells for fed batch and perfusion process
  • Experience with omics technologies such as metabolomics, proteomics, and genomics.
  • Perform process development/characterization with CHO cells expressing biopharmaceuticals in shaker flasks and multiple scale (Ambr15, Ambr 250, 10L, 50L, 100L and 200L) bioreactors.
  • Must be a self-starter, be able to work with minimal supervision in a matrix environment and effectively manage multiple projects
  • Solves complex problems through analytical thinking to identify and understand alternatives using knowledge gained through formal education, experience and sound judgment. Summarizes results in written reports and oral presentations.
  • Ensure effective information flow, timeline execution, trouble shooting, and issue resolution in multi-disciplinary matrix organization.




  • Ph.D in Chemical/Biochemical Engineering/Cell biology or related field with 0-3 years relevant experience in biopharmaceutical environment or MS with 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • Hands on experience with media and feed design/optimization.
  • Working knowledge of cell culture bioreactors and analytical techniques for product characterization.
  • Strong technical writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
