The Vice President of Specialty Distribution in Optum Frontier Therapies (OFT) will be on the leadership team of an exciting new business serving patients with rare diseases, pharma manufacturers, and providers by dispensing and servicing therapies at the frontier of healthcare. As a new Optum business, we are building on our strengths but also challenging the status quo. In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for building and expanding our accredited and licensed specialty distribution (SD) business >10x over 5 years by defining the strategy, designing the model, building the organization, winning new business, and scaling our capabilities to serve our customers both in support of the Optum Frontier Therapies (OFT) pharmacy model, as well as broader enterprise opportunities. This will require the successful candidate to leverage their existing external network to create new business opportunities but also develop a strong reputation internally across a complex matrix to develop opportunities for our existing businesses to leverage this capability. It is paramount the successful candidate is skilled and experienced in leading and identifying the emerging opportunities and challenges in specialty distribution for limited distribution drugs, and in particular orphan and rare disease (ORD) as well as cell and gene therapy (CGT) products. While the OFT specialty distribution business will focus on building out services as an independent P&L, it is of paramount importance the business serves the broader OFT P&L, helping to optimize the CGT and ORD centers of excellence within OFT. This leadership role will also be responsible for designing, recruiting and building out the organization to have the right people and culture to support the expansion of the business. This role will be measured by the number and value of opportunities both within and outside the company, as well as the speed with which we expand the business, and a strong culture oriented towards high employee experience and net promoter scores. Metrics for this leader include delivering $20M of IOI from specialty distribution and $100M IOI total from OFT within the next three years, securing new clients (internal and external) to the SD business, and winning distribution contracts in the CGT and ORD space.

  • Lead all aspects of Specialty Distribution (SD) business for Optum Frontier Therapies (OFT)
  • ""
  • Build OFT SD as a major competitor in specialty distribution primarily serving the cell & gene therapy and orphan & rare disease drug marketplace to bring in new business and grow IOI to OFT. Target of delivering $50M IOI within the next 3 years
  • ""
  • Establish credibility with pharma manufacturers leveraging industry expertise and ability to advise commercial/channel counterparts on how OFT can serve their needs
  • ""
  • Develop opportunities that arise from within the UHG enterprise to provide SD services to our care providers, pharmacies, payers, and other key constituents
  • ""
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on specialty distribution for the UHG enterprise
  • ""
  • Win access to exclusive drugs in partnership with OFT rare disease pharmacy
  • ""
  • Build strong sales pipeline and secure a minimum of 4 SD contracts in first year

  • Create org structure and hire top talent for SD organization

  • Navigate and influence multiple cross-functional teams in a complex, matrixed work environment

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in specialty distribution business
  • ""
  • 7+ years of combined experience in business development, strategy and/or innovation
  • ""
  • Strong financial acumen (owning a P&L or managing a budget)
  • ""
  • Strong contract negotiation skills
  • ""
  • Excellent communication skills written and verbal
  • ""
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve goals in an ambiguous and matrixed work environment

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and influence others

  • Effectively communicate at all levels of the organization, comfortable presenting to senior leaders

Colorado Residents Only: The salary/hourly range for Colorado residents is $169,500 to $322,500.
